Why has the CRS score cut-off increased?

The January 8 Express Entry draw was the first draw occurring since a period of Canadian holidays causing a longer-than-normal period between draws. The previous draw occurred on December 19, 2019, meaning that nearly three weeks have passed between draws.

When more time passes between draws, more candidates have the chance to enter the pool and more candidates the opportunity to increase their scores. Usually this results in the CRS score cut-off increasing, as is the case with the January 8 draw.

There are a range of factors that may influence the CRS cut-off score, including:

• The number of candidates invited;
• The frequency of draws;
• The number of new candidates entering the pool; and
• Changes in the CRS scores of existing candidates, whose scores may increase or decrease depending on their circumstances.

As of December 27, there were a total of 138,955 candidates in the Express Entry pool. The graph below shows their distribution according to their CRS score at that time.
